Big elephant herds, wide-open dust plains and — on a clear morning — Mount Kilimanjaro rising over the horizon just across the border.
Amboseli National Park sits at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro and is famous for two things: its large, easily-viewed elephant herds and some of the best mountain views in East Africa. Swamps fed by underground rivers from Kilimanjaro keep the park green even in dry season, drawing wildlife in close to the main tracks.
A typical day here — a good starting point while we put together the full guide from our own trip.
The mountain is usually clearest at dawn before clouds build up — worth the early start.
Early MorningAmboseli's swamps draw in large elephant families at close range — one of the best places in Africa to watch them.
Late MorningA short walk up the park's only public viewpoint for a wide look across the plains and swamps below.
MiddayA second loop as the light softens, with Kilimanjaro often glowing pink at sunset.
EveningNote: this is a placeholder guide built from typical highlights — the real story from our own trip will be added here soon.
