Kenya's coastal capital — narrow Old Town streets, centuries of Swahili and Portuguese history, and the Indian Ocean right at the edge of it all.
Mombasa is Kenya's second city and its cultural gateway to the coast — a working port town with a deep Swahili history, wound through with narrow Old Town alleys, spice markets, mosques and centuries-old coral-stone buildings. Fort Jesus stands guard over the harbour, and just outside the city, Nyali and Bamburi's white-sand beaches pick up where the history lesson leaves off.
Mix the old city with beach time, coastal food and ocean experiences for a fuller Mombasa adventure.
Walk through coral-stone streets, carved doors and historic landmarks while discovering the Swahili, Arab, Portuguese and Indian influences that shaped the coast.
Slow the pace with white-sand beaches, warm Indian Ocean water and easy access to coastal restaurants and sunset spots.
Take a traditional dhow cruise, enjoy the coastline from the water, or plan a marine adventure around the reefs and clear coastal waters.
Try coastal favourites such as pilau, biryani, coconut-based dishes and fresh seafood while exploring the city's lively markets and neighbourhoods.
Start with Old Town and Fort Jesus, spend the afternoon on the beach, then finish with a coastal dinner or sunset dhow cruise. For a longer stay, add marine activities and nearby coastal escapes for a complete Indian Ocean holiday.
A typical day here — a good starting point while we put together the full guide from our own trip.

The practical bits — when to come, how to get here, and what to pack for the coast.
December to March is the driest, sunniest stretch on the coast — warm water, calm seas and the best conditions for beach days and dhow trips.
About 7 hours by road from Nairobi, or a quick hour-long domestic flight into Moi International Airport if you'd rather skip the drive.
Light, breathable clothing, a swimsuit, reef-safe sunscreen and something to cover shoulders and knees for Old Town's mosques and historic sites.
Old Town and Fort Jesus sit right on the harbour, with Nyali and Bamburi's resort beaches a short drive north across Nyali Bridge.
